Patricia and Cristina are twins based in Miami, Florida who love travelling and photography.
How long have you been doing software engineering?
Both: We graduated from university with a Computer Science degree back in 2004. Since then, we’ve been working as software programmers, using a variety of different technologies.
How did you both get interested in computer science?
Both: When we started university neither of us had an idea of what career path we wanted to take. This was around the ‘dot com’ boom, which prompted us to take an Intro to Programming class. We really enjoyed it and decided to keep taking classes, and eventually we both got the opportunity to do an internship with IBM in Austin, Texas, which solidified our love for computer science.
What do you love most about software engineering?
Patricia: I love that the software industry is an ever-evolving field, that keeps you on your toes, and forever learning new technologies, programming paradigms, architectures, etc.
Cristina: I love that software engineering makes me constantly challenge myself. I enjoy finding innovative solutions to problems using technology, and collaborating with smart and creative team members is definitely a plus.
How do you find working professionally with each other?
Both: Fun! We enjoy having each other as sounding board and someone we could go to for advice. We also like to interchange ideas and brainstorm solution to problems together.
What type of problem would you ask your sister for help with?
Patricia: I need a second pair of eyes! Why is this piece of code not behaving as expected?!
Cristina: I am investigating this problem, wondering if you ran into the same issue on your team…
What are your hobbies outside work?
Cristina: It might not be shocking to you to learn that we usually hang out together outside of work too. We do photography together and many times families would contact us to take their family portraits. Patricia usually does the picture taking, and I the post processing/editing portion. However, whenever we get bored we interchange our roles. We really enjoy the creative aspect of it, and coming up with concepts and bringing it to fruition.
What is the most interesting place you have traveled?
Patricia: I think India, Nepal, and Peru are my top 3 places.
Cristina: I would add to that Egypt and Jordan. Overall, each of the places we have traveled have been amazing experiences in their own ways. So hard to pick!
What are three things still left on your bucket list?
Patricia: I need to muster up the courage to do skydiving. Do a safari. Visit more places in Asia.
Cristina: I would love to hold a panda bear, and/or a koala. I’ve never done scuba diving, so it is in my bucket list. Skydiving.
What is one piece of advice you’d love to give to your younger self?
Patricia: Don’t fear change so much, embrace it! Experience has taught me that after every change, growth and positive outcomes follow.
Cristina: I wish I could tell my younger self to not worry too much, that it is all part of the journey to personal growth. I have always loved this quote: Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.
